I'm Aisha Souto-Maior, a Brooklyn native now based in Montpellier.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, I've spent the last decade living across Paris, Amsterdam, and now Montpellier.

I grew up building things with Legos, getting lost in books and people watching around the city. I was always curious about people, how they felt about things, and what made a story or an experience stick with someone. That curiosity eventually led me to Parsons to study interaction design, and I loved it because it was at the intersection of design and computer science.

For the last 16 years, I've been working in UX research and design, helping teams understand their users and turn complex product challenges into experiences that actually work for the people using them. Previously Lead Designer at Skillcrush and Senior UX Designer and team lead at Booking.com.

Since 2021, I've been consulting through Studio Aisha, working with startups, mid to large companies and global nonprofits on research, UX strategy and experience design. I help teams figure out what's actually going on with their users, where the real opportunities are, and how to move forward with clarity and confidence. Collaboration is at the heart of how I work, and I'm at my best when my clients and I are genuinely working as a team.

Experience

Studio Aisha

January 2021 - Current

I started Studio Aisha to do the kind of work I love, on my own terms. I've worked with individual entrepreneurs, global nonprofits, startups, and mid- to large-size companies on everything from research and UX strategy to information architecture and experience design. What ties it all together is helping teams understand the real problem before moving toward a solution, and working through it together.

Booking.com

July 2017 - December 2020

I joined as a UX designer and grew into a senior designer and team lead over nearly four years. Most of my time was spent working closely with product managers and researchers on complex, high-traffic customer journeys, trying to understand the decisions users were making and why, so we could design experiences that actually served what they needed. I learned a lot about how to design strategically across a large system without losing sight of the user.

Skillcrush

January 2015 - June 2017

As lead designer, I worked across product, UX, and art direction, leading a small multidisciplinary team. I got to be close to the whole picture there: research, testing, delivery, and making sure everything felt coherent from a brand perspective. I also led the redesign of the learning platform interface and served as subject matter expert for three courses I helped develop, which pushed me to think about the experience from both sides of it.

Penton Media

November 2010 - July 2014

I worked closely with project managers and engineers to design new functionality and layouts for custom Drupal-based CMSs, and was one of two designers responsible for migrating over 80 legacy sites to a new platform. It was fast-paced, detailed work with ever-changing stakeholder requirements, and it's where I really learned to lean into collaboration with developers and PMs as a core part of how I work.
